Filing federal + state taxes
In the U.S., you usually have to file two separate tax returns.
- Federal: This goes to the national government (IRS).
- State: This goes to the state where you live (e.g., California or New York). Some states, like Texas or Florida, have no state income tax, which saves you a lot of money!
- The Process: You gather your W-2s, your 1098-T (tuition form), and your passport. You must file by April 15th every year, even if you didn't earn any money (you file Form 8843 just to stay compliant).
