Avoiding fees and overdrafts
U.S. banks make billions of dollars from people who aren't paying attention. You must protect yourself from these vampire fees.
- The Overdraft Trap: If you spend $10 but only have $5 in your checking account, the bank will cover you but charge you a **$35 fee**.
- 1. Disable "Overdraft Protection": Tell the bank to just decline your card if you don't have the money. It's embarrassing, but it's free. 2. Watch the Monthly Maintenance Fee: Many banks charge $12/month unless you keep a minimum balance or have a direct deposit. If your bank charges this, move to a "No-Fee" bank like Capital One or Chime.
